Laminate vs Hybrid vs Vinyl: Scratch and Stain Test

We get asked the same question almost every day: which is better, hybrid, laminate or vinyl? I’ve had that conversation hundreds of times, and the honest answer has always been “it depends on your circumstances.” True, and completely useless if you’re standing in front of three samples trying to decide.

So rather than tell you again, I decided to show you. Seven floors on the bench (two vinyls, three hybrids and two laminates), attacked with a screwdriver, then left under red wine and cold coffee for five days.

Laminate was the most scratch-resistant flooring of the three, and it wasn’t close. It was the only material that came away with no visible scratching and no debris, and the cheapest board on the bench beat a hybrid costing more than twice as much. Within the hybrid and vinyl group, wear layer thickness predicted the result almost perfectly. The screwdriver punched clean through one sample, a 0.3 mm vinyl plank. Notably, the hybrid with the same 0.3 mm wear layer wasn’t breached.

Everything cleaned up reasonably well after five days of wine and coffee, but not equally. That’s the part I got wrong on camera and only worked out afterwards.

Laminate won the scratch test outright, and it wasn’t close. The cheapest floor on the bench beat the most expensive one by a wide margin. Everything cleaned up well enough for practical purposes, but only one material came back genuinely unmarked.

That does not make laminate the right floor for every room, and I’ll explain why further down.

What We Tested

Seven samples, all products we actually sell. Prices are per square metre at the time of writing.

One sample isn’t named. The specification is what matters here, not the badge.

The Nebula is the odd one out, and it’s the reason I included it. It’s an 8 mm hybrid with only a 0.3 mm wear layer, the same wear layer as the 2 mm vinyl plank sitting next to it. It’s discontinued now, but it gave me a clean comparison: identical surface, completely different core. Same story with the two 0.5 mm samples, one vinyl and one hybrid.

That’s the pairing that makes this test worth doing. If the wear layer is the same, anything that differs is down to what’s underneath it.

How We Tested It

I want to be upfront about the method, because it wasn’t a laboratory and I’m not going to pretend it was.

The scratch test. Same screwdriver, same tip, same person, roughly the same pressure across every board, except for the laminate, which was treated much more harshly. Assessment was purely visual: no depth gauge, no magnification, no before-and-after measurements. I looked at whether the tip broke through the wear layer and whether the sample produced debris.

The stain test. Equal amounts of red wine and cold black coffee on every sample, left to sit for five days. Cleaned with the same sponge (green scourer on one side) and plain water. No cleaning products.

The Limitations, Stated Plainly

Four things about this test are imperfect, and you should know all of them before you weigh the results:

  • The board colours weren’t matched. This is the big one. Scratches show up more on dark boards; the wine residue showed up more on light ones. That cuts in both directions across the sample set, and it means the visual comparison isn’t perfectly like-for-like.
  • The laminates got a harder time than everything else. I spent longer working on them with the screwdriver because I couldn’t get them to mark. That’s a flaw in the method, but note which way it cuts. Laminate got the roughest treatment and still came out cleanest.
  • It’s a gouge, not wear. A screwdriver tip is a concentrated point load. It’s a fair simulation of a dropped knife, a dog’s claw, a bit of grit under a chair leg or a stone in a boot tread. It isn’t a simulation of ten years of foot traffic.
  • No instrumentation. Visual assessment only, no photographic before-and-after.

I said a couple of times while filming that the test was “probably a bit unfair.” Thinking about it since, I’d put it differently: it was harsh, and harsher on the laminate than on anything else. That’s the opposite of unfair to the products that lost.

The 0.3 mm vinyl was the only sample the screwdriver punched through. It went straight past the wear layer, through the print film and into the layers underneath. I wasn’t expecting that, and it’s the single clearest argument I can give you against buying a floor on price alone.

Every hybrid and vinyl sample produced debris. Little white chunks of wear layer coming off the board as I dragged the tip across it. Once you wipe them away and stand back, most of the damage is hard to see from standing height, but get down close and the indentations are still there. On the 0.7 mm Stone-Tek you can still find the scratch line after a good rub. It hasn’t gone anywhere; it’s just less obvious.

Neither laminate produced any debris at all. The only thing coming off was metal residue from the screwdriver tip itself: grey marks that wiped straight off with a finger and left nothing behind. On the entry-level Aqua Heim there’s one tiny mark if you hunt for it. On the Sunstar, nothing.

Wear Layer Thickness Matters, But the Core Matters Too

Read down that table and the pattern is obvious: within the vinyl and hybrid group, thicker wear layer means better scratch resistance. 0.3 mm is genuinely thin. 0.7 mm is a real improvement.

But look at the two 0.3 mm samples. The vinyl was breached; the hybrid wasn’t. Identical wear layer, different outcome. The reason is what’s underneath. The vinyl is soft, so the tip sinks in and keeps going, and the wear layer stretches and tears with it. The hybrid has a rigid core that stops the tip from going deep, so the wear layer is supported and only abrades rather than punctures.

So: the wear layer determines what marks it, and the core determines how badly.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is shoppers comparing flooring by thickness alone. A thicker board doesn't automatically mean a tougher floor. In our experience, the wear layer protects the surface from scratches, while the core influences how the floor responds when something sharp or heavy hits it. Looking at both specifications together gives you a much better indication of real-world durability than overall board thickness.

Result 2: The Stain Test, and Where I Got It Wrong on Camera

I filmed the cleanup after five days and my conclusion at the time was that everything came up well and the differences were minor. Watching for wine residue, I said a couple of times that I could see a faint reddish tone on the vinyl and hybrid, but I put it down to a dirty sponge and moved on.

It wasn’t the sponge. Once the samples were completely dry and I looked again properly, that faint red tone on the lighter vinyl and hybrid boards was still there. It’s permanent. It hasn’t come out since.

Here’s why, and it’s the same material science that drives the scratch result: the PVC/polyurethane wear layer on hybrid and vinyl is porous. Given five days, the wine pigment worked its way in, and once it’s in, it doesn’t come back out. No amount of scrubbing shifts it.

The melamine wear layer on the laminates isn’t porous in the same way. The wine sat on top of it for five days and then washed off, leaving nothing.

To be fair to the resilient floors: this is a five-day dwell time. Nobody sensible leaves a spill for five days. Wipe up wine within a few hours, and you won’t see any of this. The coffee behaved itself on everything. And a fair bit of the scrubbing effort on every sample was getting residue out of the embossing texture rather than off the surface itself. Deeper embossing traps more, regardless of material.

But if you have kids, or you rent the place out, or you’re just realistic about how long things sit on a floor before anyone deals with them, that porosity is worth knowing about.

Why the Spec Sheets Didn’t Predict Any of This

Here’s the part that I think matters most, because it explains something that looks bizarre in the results table.

The Eclipse Stone-Tek hybrid is rated Class 34 commercial / Class 42 industrial. That is a serious rating. It’s approved for industrial use. It costs $63.95 per square metre. It scratched.

The Eclipse Aqua Heim laminate is AC4. It costs $24.95 per square metre. It didn’t.

That looks like a contradiction, and it isn’t. The two numbers measure different things and are produced by different tests.

  • AC ratings (AC1 to AC5) come from EN 13329. It’s a Taber abrasion test: an abrasive wheel is spun against the surface, and they count revolutions until the print layer starts to wear through. AC4 means it survived at least 4,000 cycles. It’s a measure of abrasion: grit, sand and foot traffic gradually wearing the surface away.
  • Class ratings (23, 31, 32, 34, 42) come from EN ISO 10874. This is a use classification, not a hardness score. It tells you the intensity of traffic a product is built for across a bundle of criteria. The first digit is the setting: 2 is domestic, 3 is commercial, 4 is industrial. The second is the intensity within it.

Neither one is a scratch test. Abrasion is a wheel sanding a surface. Scratching is a hard point gouging into it. A floor can be excellent at one and mediocre at the other, and that’s precisely what we saw on the bench.

This is also why comparing a vinyl’s wear layer in millimetres against a laminate’s AC rating is meaningless. Different specifications, different protocols, different physical properties. There’s no conversion between them, and anyone who offers you one is guessing.

That gap is the whole reason this test was worth doing. The spec sheet answers “how long before it wears out.” It doesn’t answer “what happens when the dog runs across it.”

So What’s Actually Going On in the Material?

Laminate’s wear layer is melamine, a hard thermoset resin, essentially a sheet of cured plastic glass over the print layer. Very hard, very difficult to scratch, non-porous.

Hybrid and vinyl use a PVC/polyurethane wear layer. Softer, flexible, more forgiving underfoot, and easier to gouge, with more pigment absorption.

There’s a trade-off attached, and it’s not in laminate’s favour. That hard surface has to sit on something rigid, or it’ll crack, which is why laminate boards feel harder underfoot and are noticeably noisier in the room than hybrid or vinyl. Hardness and quietness are pulling in opposite directions here. You don’t get both.

What We’d Actually Recommend

Based on this test plus what we see coming back from customers:

Kids and Pets

Choose laminate. Claws, toys, dropped cutlery and dragged furniture. This is the scenario the scratch test simulates most directly, and laminate won it outright.

Wet Areas and Moisture Risk

Choose hybrid or vinyl. This test did not test water, and I’m not going to imply otherwise. Hybrid and vinyl have the edge on moisture, and it’s a real edge. Note that our Eclipse Aqua laminates are water-resistant, which narrows the gap, but if moisture is your primary concern, that’s still resilient flooring territory.

High Traffic Areas

Choose laminate. Same reasoning as above: grit tracked in on shoes is the everyday version of the screwdriver test.

Noise-Sensitive Rooms

It depends which noise. There are two different problems here, and they have different answers.

For airborne noise (the hollow tapping you hear in the room you’re standing in), vinyl is quietest, and laminate is the loudest of the three.

For structure-borne noise travelling down to the room below, laminate is actually more forgiving than vinyl because of the underlay it sits on. So an upstairs bedroom and a downstairs living room want different things, and it’s worth being clear about which one is bothering you before you choose.

Large Commercial Floors

Usually glue-down vinyl. You’ll see vinyl plank in every Woolworths and Coles you walk into, and it’s not a cost decision. Under that volume of foot traffic, you don’t want a floating floor moving around; you want it stuck down.

The trade-off is on the way out. Lifting a glue-down floor means pulling up the planks and grinding the adhesive residue off the slab. A floating floor you just unclip and start again. Domestically, that’s a strong argument for floating floors.

Would I Do It Differently Next Time?

Yes, and I’m happy to. If there’s interest, part two would be a controlled version:

  • Matched board colours across all samples, so the visual comparison is genuinely like-for-like.
  • Fixed passes at a measured load, rather than me leaning on a screwdriver.
  • Photographed before-and-after for every sample under the same lighting.
  • Staged dwell times of one hour, one day and five days, because the one-hour number is the one that actually reflects real life.
  • A castor chair and dropped-object test, which is much closer to how floors get damaged in practice than anything I did here.

The Bottom Line

Across seven floors, one screwdriver and five days of coffee and red wine:

  • Laminate is the most scratch-resistant of the three, by a clear margin. It’s the only material that came away with no visible damage and no debris, and the only one that shed wine completely.
  • Hybrid sits in the middle, and its rigid core does real work. At the same wear layer thickness, hybrid resisted deep gouging better than vinyl every time.
  • Vinyl is the softest and marked most easily, and a 0.3 mm wear layer is genuinely thin. Ours failed the test.

And the part I’d underline: price didn’t predict performance. The $24.95 laminate beat the $63.95 industrial-rated hybrid on scratch resistance. Not because the hybrid is a bad floor. It isn’t, and its rating is legitimate for what that rating measures. It’s because you were never comparing like with like in the first place.

None of which means laminate is the right answer for your house. It means scratch resistance is one axis, moisture is another, noise is a third, and the honest recommendation still depends on which room you’re standing in. But at least now the scratch question has an answer you can see rather than one you have to take my word for.

In our test, laminate. Its melamine wear layer showed no visible scratching and produced no debris under a screwdriver, while every hybrid and vinyl sample was visibly marked. Hybrid outperformed vinyl at equal wear layer thickness thanks to its rigid core.

Hybrid scratches more easily than laminate but resists it better than vinyl. In our test, all three hybrid samples showed visible marks and shed debris from the wear layer, though none were penetrated. A thicker wear layer helped: the 0.7 mm sample performed noticeably better than the 0.3 mm.

For scratch and wear resistance in vinyl and hybrid, yes, thicker is better, and our results tracked wear layer thickness closely. But the core matters too. Two samples with an identical 0.3 mm wear layer performed differently because the rigid hybrid core stopped the screwdriver from sinking as deep as it did into the soft vinyl.

No. AC ratings come from EN 13329 Taber abrasion testing on laminate; wear layer thickness is a physical measurement on resilient flooring. Different tests, different properties, no conversion between them.

If you clean them up quickly, yes. Left for five days in our test, red wine left a faint permanent tint on lighter-coloured vinyl and hybrid samples, because the PVC/polyurethane wear layer is porous. The same spill washed completely off the laminates.

On scratch resistance, laminate. It was the only material in our test that came away unmarked. If moisture is a bigger concern than claws, hybrid or a water-resistant laminate is worth considering instead.
