Hybrid flooring gives you the great look of hardwood flooring, without the maintenance.

This is the future of flooring; amazing, natural colours, matched with the durability of laminate and vinyl flooring.

What are the benefits of hybrid flooring?

Hybrid flooring is 100% waterproof, and can be used in any area of your home or business. This includes bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens, where unexpected spills may happen, or wet mopping might be needed.

The multi-layered construction of hybrid flooring also makes it suited for extreme temperature changes, such as very warm areas that experience harsh sunlight. In addition, hybrid planks create a thick, durable layer of flooring that stands the test of many long years of wear and tear.

It's also DIY-friendly. With a built-in underlay and easy interlocking systems, it's easier to install than any other flooring type. Prefer a professional to lay it for you? We have access to 200+ floor layers Australia-wide.

WPC and SPC are 2 different types of Hybrid flooring that have a lot in common. WPC technology was first created for composite decking, and the product eventually made its way into flooring. SPC is a later development and improvement upon the older WPC and solved a lot of WPC’s inherrant issues.

WPC Flooring originally stood for ‘Wood Polymer Composite’ even though now there is no wood in the product that has been used for Flooring. The original WPC was developed as a decking material for external use, which made it an excellent concept to be developed as a flooring category, which it was. WPC Flooring is made predominantly of limestone powder and PVC, but has a foaming agent added to the mix, which aerates the product and gives it a relatively light weight. It was waterproof, easy to install and was easily able to utilize existing Vinyl plank picture films and wear layers.

Due to the aerated nature of the WPC core, you will notice that all WPC flooring has an almost sandpaper like feel when you run your finger down the join. Because of the aerated nature of the core, the product is honeycombed on a micro level, meaning that a picture film cannot be bonded directly to a WPC Core, otherwise ‘micro-dimples’ will show through into the picture when the layers of the product are pressed together. To overcome this issue, a thin layer of Vinyl plank flooring is laminated to the top of the WPC core which in effect gives the picture film a flat surface to bond to.

The Aeration of the core however is the greatest weakness of WPC flooring, as the honeycombed nature of the product makes the joins inherently quite weak and pliable. Additionally, at greater temperatures, the air bubbles within the core become hot and expand causing mush greater expansion than an SPC Hybrid Floor. Because of this, WPC floors can usually only be laid in ¼ of the volume of an SPC floor before the floor needs to be compartmentalised into Separate rafts.

SPC Flooring is a later development of Hybrid Flooring that uses a solid core that does not contain the foaming agent that is present in WPC. While each manufacturer uses a different ‘Recipe’ for their core, SPC Hybrid has a higher limestone content than WPC Flooring does: usually 80% or more. Because SPC Hybrid does not have a foaming agent added, it is solid, and not honeycombed like WPC Hybrid is. This has several benefits.

Firstly, because the core is solid, SPC Hybrid can have a picture film bonded directly to the core. This means that while SPC Hybrid is more expensive in terms of the material costs, the manufacturing cost is less, meaning that the costs of the products are about the same. Additionally, because of the solid core, the joins on SPC hybrid flooring are much stronger, and the volume of flooring that can be laid before the floor needs to be compartmentalised is about 4 times that of WPC Hybrid before there needs to be any expansion breaks!

Yes and no. Typically, WPC Hybrid Flooring is thicker than SPC Hybrid Flooring, so you really need to compare them as separate products. I general though, SPC Hybrid Flooring because it is solid, can go in much larger rafts than WPC Hybrid Flooring.

When comparing the thickness of SPC Hybrid Flooring, the real thing you are looking at is the thickness of each component. Typically, most SPC Hybrid has a .5mm wear layer, so the remainder is the core and the backing. As with all flooring products, the Core is the most important thing for Stability. A 6mm hybrid that has a 2mm underlay backing will have in general a 3.5mm core. A 6mm Hybrid with a 1mm underlay backing will have a 4.5mm core instead.

While this may seem like only 1mm, the reality is that as a product system, this becomes an almost 30% increase in the weight of the core making the entire product system more stable and temperature resistant.

SPC Flooring that has a core of around 5mm to .5mm wear layer has proven to be very successful for stability and has the ability to withstand direct sunlight that causes lesser products to fail.

So yes, thicker is better, but compare the core across the whole system, and not just the total thickness of the product. As always, if you need any help with this, please contact one of our Awesome Flooring Experts.

Hybrid Flooring is a 100% Waterproof Flooring Option. Hybrid Flooring is intended for use in any area of your home: Even Wet areas like Bathrooms, Toilets and Laundries. Because these are areas where water is splashed around, and humidity abides, Bamboo, Timber and Laminate must usually avoid these areas….but not Hybrid Flooring!

The Calcium Carbonate Core of Hybrid Flooring makes it very resistant to changes in temperature when compared with other flooring products. I addition, thicker SPC Core Hybrids have proven almost impervious to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight!

Additionally, because Hybrid Flooring will expand and contract far less than other flooring categories (if at all,) it most often eliminates the need for unsightly expansion joints. Combine all of this with the same durable wear layer of LVT flooring, and Hybrid will tick most of the boxes for residential application.

Hybrid really has little in the way of things that go against it. It is tough, durable and also suited to small commercial applications. While not as scratch resistant as Laminate Flooring, Hybrid Flooring is the great all-rounder. If you want to know more, contact our Awesome sales team!

Hybrid Flooring is 100% Waterproof. There is no Caveat on this. It is ideal for any area of the home, and most suppliers will rate their Hybrid Flooring for Wet Area Usage. However, you must still follow the manufacturer’s requirements for sub-floor levelling, so this means that you will lose the runoff that many bathrooms have.

Hybrid Flooring is best suited to any room if you want a Waterproof, Tough, Durable, Great Looking Floor that is easy to keep clean. Because Hybrid Flooring is 100% Waterproof, it is able to be used in Wet Areas where many other flooring Categories cannot. It is important to note though, for Wet Area Use, you must still have an even subfloor, so you will lose that runoff in your bathroom.

Additionally, Hybrid Flooring is an excellent choice for small commercial applications where a quick and hassle free installation is required. Salons, parlours and small restaurants are perfect for Hybrid Flooring. As Hybrid Flooring is a Floating Floor System that is not as rigid as Laminate or Timber, it is best kept out of Child Care Centres and places with a constant large volume or traffic.

While we always recommend the services of a professional Floor Layer, Hybrid Flooring is possibly the easiest category of Flooring to install as a DIY project.

A Metal Straightedge, Utility Knife, Pencil, Tape measure and Jigsaw will allow you to get the job done. If you are going to install the project yourself, always read the Suppliers Installation Requirements through several times, and plan the job in your head before starting.

If your Subfloor falls outside of the Supplier’s specifications, it may be best to engage the services of a Floor Preparation Specialist to tackle this task for you. If you want the floor to look great in 25 years, money spent of Floor Preparation is money well spent.
